The transitional government of Burkina Faso has made a historic decision that has touched the hearts of many and resonate with people across the nation. In a move that’s been long-awaited by many, Burkina Faso’s transitional government made a monumental decision on Wednesday. They decided to elevate the late Captain Thomas Sankara, the father of the Burkinabe revolution, to the prestigious rank of “hero of the nation.” It’s a recognition that holds immense significance, and we’re about to tell you why. For those who may not be familiar with Thomas Sankara, he was more than just a leader. He was a pan-African icon who rose to power in a coup in August 1983. He had a vision of transforming Burkina Faso, then known as Upper Volta, into a self-reliant and progressive nation. During his brief but impactful time as president, he worked tirelessly to transform Burkina Faso. He championed social justice, gender equality, and grassroots development, earning him admiration far beyond Burkina Faso’s borders.

However, his inspiring journey was tragically cut short on October 15, 1987, when he was assassinated in a coup led by his own number two, Blaise Compaoré. That fateful day, a commando of coup soldiers stormed the headquarters of his National Revolutionary Council and took his life, along with those of his companions. This shocking event sent shockwaves through Burkina Faso and the world. The decision to bestow the title of “hero of the nation” upon Thomas Sankara is a profound one. It aims to perpetuate the core values upon which Burkina Faso’s Republic is founded. It’s a tribute to his indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to the nation’s cause.

Blaise Compaoré, the man responsible for Sankara’s assassination, clung to power until a popular uprising in 2014 led to his downfall. In April 2022, after a six-month trial, a military court in Ouagadougou sentenced him, albeit in absentia, to life imprisonment for his role in Sankara’s murder. Thomas Sankara and his twelve companions were first buried on the outskirts of Ouagadougou. However, in a poignant moment in 2015, their bodies were exhumed for legal proceedings and laid to rest in a memorial built on the very site of their assassinations.

The status of “hero of the nation” was created in June 2022 to honor individuals who displayed “exceptional bravery in the defense of a national cause” or “exceptional and honorable prowess for the nation.” Thomas Sankara’s life and his unwavering commitment to his nation’s cause undoubtedly make him a fitting recipient of this honor.

Now, here’s another remarkable development: A “national and international ceremony to pay tribute to the victims” is scheduled for October 15, 2023. This day will be dedicated to honoring their memory and acknowledging the profound impact of their sacrifices. Since taking power in a coup on September 30, 2022, transitional President Captain Ibrahim Traoré has consistently paid tribute to the memory of Thomas Sankara. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who continue to be inspired by his vision.

Burkina Faso’s decision to honor Thomas Sankara as a hero of the nation is a powerful reminder of the enduring impact of visionary leaders. It’s a celebration of ideals that transcend time and continue to inspire generations. If you like this video, don’t hesitate to like, subscribe and share.
