Why is it that whenever we talk about the coup-led countries in the Sahel that are making waves and changing the order of things, it’s always Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso but never Guinea? It’s as if we forget that just like Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, Guinea is currently ruled by President Mamadu Doumbouya who like Captain Traore came into power through a coup in 2021. So, why is it that despite the fact that he came to power through a coup, his leadership is not making waves or threatening the West as much as the military government in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso? What exactly differentiates Colonel Mamady from Captain Traore? Why is he not part of the recently established Alliance of the Sahel? Let’s find out in this video.
Since Colonel Mamady came into power in 2021, he has only been in the spotlight, three times. The first time was when he took over the helm of leadership from Alpha Conde in September 2021. The second was when he showed support with Mali and Burkina Faso when the coup first occurred in Niger and also during his powerful speech at the 78th United Nations General Assembly. The third time is the most recent when he dissolved the government in Guinea. Aside from all these times, Guinea and its interim president have been pretty calm compared to all that has been happening since the military government took over in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. While Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have kicked French forces out of their countries, Guinea under the leadership of Colonel Mamady has not done anything of such. In 2022, France quietly resumed military cooperation with Guinea with Colonel Mamady asking the French military for support in securing its north-east border with Mali.
While we have heard about anti-french sentiment in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, nothing of such has been heard in Guinea. Since they came into power, the military juntas of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have been quite vocal about their stance against French intervention and policies toward their countries and they have taken different stances to show that they stand in solidarity against France. Such actions include closing the French embassy, kicking out the French ambassador, exposing the French imperialist attitude towards them, and removing French as the official language. Colonel Mamady on the other hand has not done anything definitive to show that he stands against France. So, why is Colonel Mamady’s leadership different from that of Ibrahim Traore, Assimi Goita and General Tiani?
The first thing you need to understand is that Colonel Mamady was a former French legionnaire. This means that Mamady was part of the French Legion, a unique military Corps of the French Army that accepts foreign recruits who are willing to serve in the French Army. And after three years they are given French citizenship or immediately after being wounded during a battle for France under a provision known as French by spilled blood. Colonel Mamady was a member of the French Legion for five years after training at France’s Ecole de Guerre military academy. Certainly, one thing that would be required from every member of the French Legion would be their loyalty to France even after they retired from the force. This means that there are certain things that Colonel Mamady cannot do against France. So, when Ibrahim Traore is busy closing down the French embassy and building diplomatic relations with Russia, Colonel Mamady can’t do any of that because he has been a part of the French system so his hands are tied.

Secondly, Colonel Mamady is married to a French woman, Lauriane Doumbouya. Now, this woman is not just an ordinary French citizen, she is also an active member of the French National Gendarmerie. The French National Gendarmerie is one of two national law enforcement forces of France, along with the National Police but is also a part of the military and so fulfills a range of military and defense missions. So, as an active member of a French force, do you think she would allow her husband to do anything that goes against France? Of course not. Therefore, in addition to being connected to France through the Legion, Colonel Mamadi is also connected through his family, and so he can never do anything against France. It’s part of the reason why some people speculated that France was behind the coup that brought Colonel Mamady into power given that the former President, Alpha Conde was staunchly against France and France’s relationship with Guinea had deteriorated under his leadership. These people believe that Colonel Mamady was used to replace Alpha Conde who was giving serious headaches in France. But, whether or not this is true, nobody truly knows.
Thirdly, Colonel Doumbouya is among 25 Guinean officials the EU has been threatening to sanction for alleged human rights abuses committed in recent years under President Condé whom he later overthrew. So, this means that before Mamady took power, he was already on the list of Guinean officials who have been accused of committing human rights abuse. Now, France is part of the European Union, so somehow, France has the Colonel on a leash. If he dares do anything against them, there is no doubt that the European Union with France’s backing, would find a way to accuse him of something in the guise of human rights abuse and then sanction him. In essence, the hands of Colonel Mamady are completely tied. Every move he makes is constantly being watched and that is why he has decided to be quiet when Captain Traore and the other military junta are making waves on the international scene.
The only thing Colonel Mamdy can do is speak out. That’s why during the United Nations Assembly held in New York last year, Colonel Mamady through his speech somehow revealed the pressure he has been under since he took over power in Guinea. He stated that the wave of coups across West Africa did not just occur because the military juntas were opportunists but because there were problems that needed to be solved and there was a need to remove regimes that had stayed for a long time such as that of Alpha Conde. Colonel Mamady then revealed that on getting to the seat, he was shocked at how European nations such as France preach about Democracy and lack of corruption and yet they are the ones who pressure him to take certain actions to promote their National interest against that of the interest of Guinea. He also admitted that he now understood why some African leaders do not act in the interest of their people because of the external pressures from the West. All this simply confirms that even though General Mamdy wants to be revolutionary like Captain Traore, he is under pressure not to do so. But, maybe now that he has dissolved the government, he may be making plans to stand against France.
Now aside from all this, recent revelations have shown that Colonel Mamady may have something against Ibrahim Traore and that’s why both of them have not been relating together. So, what does he have against Traore? Recall that on the 30th of September 2022, Paul Henry Damiba was ousted by Captain Traore and other young soldiers who were dissatisfied with his actions since he took over power in 2021. However, what you may not know is that Paul Henry Damiba attended and graduated from the Ecole de Guerre French military academy, the same military institution attended by Colonel Mamady. But that’s not all, both Paul Henry and Colonel Mamady attended this military school at the same time, meaning that there is no way both of them would have not met and become good friends.
You should also know that both Colonel Mamady and Paul Henry took over power in their respective countries in the same year, 2021. However, on the 30th of September 2022, Paul Henry Damiba was overthrown by Captain Traore in a coup and sent into exile in Togo. Given that Paul Henri was a good friend of Colonel Mamady, it’s safe to assume that Colonel Mamady would not want to have anything to do with someone who took power from his friend and sent him to exile. Since the Colonel came to power, he has only visited Mali to speak with Assimi Goita. This is not surprising given that in 2018, Mamady met Assimi Goita in Burkina Faso at a US Army training session for regional special forces commanders. So, both Assimi Goita and Colonel Mamady were already familiar with each other before the coup. But aside from visiting Mali and supporting the Niger coup, Colonel Mamady has not done anything to further deepen his relationship with Burkina Faso or sought to join the alliance formed by the three countries. As we stated earlier, it’s possible that it’s because he is not happy with Captain Traore and also as a result of pressure from France which views Captain Traore as a threat.
